What does the top of the reservoir look like and how big is it? Is it like a GenIII? When we had to keep the stock pumps, I put a long piece of clear vinyl tubing on the neck of the reservoir with a hose clamp. I then cut up an old reservoir and used the neck on the top of the rubber tube. This extended the top of the reservoir by about 5-6" and stopped the overflow. I thought I had some pictures, but haven't found them.

I melted down a couple of power steering pumps early in my AS career.
I did the following and have not had a problem with off the shelf stock pumps since. Some of these things have been mentioned already. A. Under drive crank pulley ( and or bigger PS pump pulley) B. Added a power steering oil cooler (bigger is better) C. Added a power steering fluid over flow line to a puke can. Line attaches to the PS pump filler cap. Sounds like you really cooked the PS fluid. This can damage the seals in your rack and if so it will leak. |

What Tom/Brian / Brian/Tom says.
Use a tube type cooler like this: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/der-13213 The squashed plate type causes too much pressure drop. Don't mess with cutting and extending the reservoir filler. Add the overflow tube from the cap. Make sure to route it up a few inches. I used a clear tube, and can see the small amount that pushes out of the reservoir when I'm turning the wheels when the engine is off. Under fill the reservoir: With the engine running, just barely cover the pump.

1. Get a reworked Turn One power steering pump.
2. Plumb a BIG power steering cooler. 3. Don't overfill the reservoir. 2/3 is usually fine. 4. Any synthetic PS fluid should work fine with these mods. Has worked for us on 4 different Camaros. |
