I would try to use the smallest crank pulley I could find and leave the other pulleys alone. The crank pulley on my Ford is only 3" in dia. Has worked great for years. Simple change that slows down all the accessory drives. Just need to figure out your new belt length.

I agree. A small crank pulley will solve water pump, alternator and P.S. over revving. I think mine is 3".

The LS is not like the gen 1 chevy and ford engines and the crank pulley is integral with the damper. As I said, find an underdrive crank pulley--usually about 20 to 30 % smaller and change the pulleys mentioned in the previous post. Do Not change the power steering pulley--
leave it alone and only change the ones mentioned. |

Dean, Is there a small pulley/damper available for the LS engines?

Jim--there are ones a bit smaller but nothing like the small ones for the 1st gen engines. We found everything was fine with one about 25-30% smaller--which is what we used in the Red FB.

You might give him the part number, or a place to buy one, if you happen to remember that.

Huh?--what?---who is that?--If only I could remember my name---
Jim, If I knew it I would have , but, That was 'bout 15 years ago and I have a hard enough time remembering which side is up and which is down with the paddle shifters in my street car !!--- Fortunately there are more choices for parts for LS engines then there was back then and Summit prob. has all of them. I am building a new 3rd gen MC and/or perhaps A/S car and remembering where I put the parts after taking the car apart is a b*tch! Getting older is not as fun as it was 50 years ago!! Now where was I--- |

Steering update. Raced at Gateway on Saturday and it was worse than Grattan. I had replaced the pump and changed to Redline fluid but it was spraying out the top like crazy. We clamped a rag to the cap, used some gasket maker on the cap, and I short shifted every lap running in 4th and 5th and it survived the first race. But it wasn't much fun. Used third a little more the second race and the pump broke again after ten laps. Fluid boiled so bad that it left scorch marks on the reservoir.
I have all kinds of new parts ordered as I am entered for the Runoffs. New pump, undersize pulley, belt, lines and a rack. Now to find the time to do all that as I don't have much. I'm hoping the pulley will do the trick. Not sure if I'll do the rack as it looks to be a PIA. Might try the hose on the cap trick like Andy S. uses to give it some expansion room. |
