Mark,

Any details on what happened? Bad crash? If so, where? Health problem with the driver in the car? Any insight?

Not official, and it may not be accurate.
Car was between two other cars, coming on to the front straight, (which I believe is a slow part of the track). Something happened and his car hit straight ahead on the end of pit wall.
He did not wear a Hans, and the injury was described as an Earnhardt type break. He was wearing a karting collar.
The cockpit was not compromised and the foot area, etc. was not damaged.

Again, just information passed on to me, I can't vouch for accuracy.

There's a 180 hairpin leading onto the front straight, I don't know how fast a CSR car can get going before hitting pit in. Can't believe the end of pit in is exposed concrete without something in front of it but then I haven't raced there in 7 years. Terrible shame, wish his family the best.

This is from Cleveland TV station and local newspaper, the car doesn't appear too damaged.

I am by no means an expert, but if it was a basilar skull fracture that ended this gentleman's life, it can occur at speeds much slower than you think. You don't have to have an Earnhart-like collision with a wall at 180+. You would be amazed at the g-force the human body of a driver/passenger endures in a 40-50 mph collision.

good point, especially if he was wearing a Karting collar.

Jim got the same info I did. He got touched exiting turn 13.
The spot he hit is covered by tires and netting. I didn't hear anything about getting past the tires and into the hard wall.
Damage on the car was limited to the RF corner.
But, unlike our behemoths, sports racer's cornering speeds are close to straight speeds.
I didn't hear anything about other extenuating circumstances.
