Board of Directors Minutes, Sports Car Club of America, August 10-11, 2001

Item 1. This proposal will add as alternative transmissions the Richmond T-10 "Race-ready" and the TREMEC 3550TKO transmissions with specified gear ratios. Effective 01/01/02.
Add paragraph K. to American Sedan Category Specifications section 17.1.7.D.3.: Alternate Transmissions: the following alternate transmissions re permitted: T-10 "Race Ready" w/ "CC" ratios (2.88, 1.91, 1.33, 1.00) TREMEC 3550TKO w/ the following ratios (3.27, 1.98, 1.34, 1.00, 0.68)
Note: The T-10 "Race Ready" transmission may also be equipped with the gear ratios from the standard T-10. MOTION (Sherrod/Limbert) PASSED.



Item 2. This revision will allow the removal and/or replacement of the rear suspension torque arm on GM F-body cars and the upper arm on Ford Mustang, effective 1/1/02.
Revise section 17.1.7.D.4.d.7. to read as follows: Pick-up points on the rear axle housing may be relocated. The removal and/or replacement of the rear suspension torque arm on GM F-body cars and the upper arm on Ford Mustangs is allowed. MOTION (Sherrod/Mellor) PASSED.

Item 3. ASCS Section 17.1.7.D.8.A, p. 61, revise wording to read as follows:
The driver's seat (only) shall be replaced with a one-piece bucket-type race seat. All seat mountings shall be reinforced per GCR Section 18.3.5 and Section 18.1.2. Factory seat tracks/brackets may be modified, reinforced, and/or removed to facilitate replacement mountings provided they perform no other functions. All other seats may be removed. MOTION (Limbert/Mellor) PASSED. The following subjects will be referred to the Board of Directors for approval. Comments, both for and against, should be addressed to the Competition Board.


Add the following wording to ASCS SEction 17.1.7.D.3. to assist in installing alternate transmissions: "3.d Hardware items (nuts, bolts, etc.) may be replaced by similar items performing the same fastening function(s). Driveshaft may be modified to fit alternate differentials and/or transmissions. Factory driveshafts may be replaced with any one-piece driveshaft of steel or aluminum construction. Minimum driveshaft diameter shall be no smaller than stock. 3.k Richmond "Super T-10 Race Ready" transmissions (GM - R0141640, Ford - R0241640) may be used, but the "CC" ratios must be installed - 2.88, 1.91, 1.33, 1.00. An alternate bellhousing may be used to facilitate installation. 3.l Tremec 3550 TKO transmissions may be used, but the 1995 Cobra R ratios must be installed - 3.27, 1.98, 1.34, 1.00, 0.68. An alternate bellhousing may be used to facilitate installation. 3.m When alternate transmissions are installed, transmission crossmembers must be modified to insure that engine location is kept in its original location and to facilitate installation of the transmission. 3.n Concentric hydraulic clutch release bearings may be used to facilitate the installation of alternate transmissions on GM cars only."
The following items are not recommended at this time


Allow alternate Ford Blocks for Mustangs. Research shows current blocks are still available.

The following subjects are submitted for MEMBER INPUT. Interested members are requested to send their comments in writing to the Competition Board [or email to compboard@scca.org].


The Competition Board is requesting Member input on the concept of a "Spec" tire for the American Sedan class. Member input should address the following topics - Use in National racing only, Regional racing only, Regional and National racing, or do not pursue this idea at all.
The following items have been referred to their respective advisory committees or tabled pending receipt of additional information


Require spec tire in Amercian Sedan.
Allow alternate Ford engine block for Mustangs.
The following items are not recommended at this time


Allow use of Richmond Gear 4+1 transmission. After extensive member input alternate transmissions have already been specified.
Allow alternate fiberglass hoods for various cars. Previously addressed.

Section 17.1.7.D.9.a.7, p. 64, Correct to read as follows: "A diagonal main hoop brace shall be located in the plane of the main hoop. In order to provide a secure seat back support a section of tubing equal to the roll bar shall be installed horizontally from the main hoop upright to diagonal brace. This tube should be no higher than the shoulder height. Seat backs shall be secured to this tube. Additionally, it is required that the horizaontal brace behind the driver's seat continue from the diagonal to the passenger side main hoop upright, or that a second diagonal be installed within the plane of the main roll hoop."

The Competition Board has become aware of the following issues and publishes these advisories to alert the membership to the Competition Board's plans regarding these issues


Any cars currently competing with bolt-in roll cages will need to be upgraded to GT category cage specification by 1/103. All cages from that date forward shall comply with GT category cages specifications.
The following items are not recommended at this time


Classify T-2 eligible GM Camaros in American Sedan with limited preparation rules. Not consistent with class purpose and intent.
The following items have been previously addressed, are submitted for information only, or require no further action by the Competition Board


Allow the use of forged steel crankshafts. Previously addressed.
Allow use of 4-bolt main journal engine blocks. Previously addressed.
Allow use of transmission and differential coolers. Previously addressed.
Revise class tire rules to eliminate the perception of "DOT" racing tires. Current tire rules are sufficient for now.
Allow removal of unused suspension components. Previously addressed.

Clarify section 17.1.7.D.9.a.2., p.63, wording to read as follows: "It shall attach to the main cabin of the car at a maximum of eight (8) points consisting of the mounting plates for the main hoop, the front hoop, the main hoop rearward braces, and the front hoop firewall braces. Two stayrods may be fitted (also referenced in 17.1.7.D.4.d.4., suspension mounting points) from the shock or strut towers back to the firewall or through the firewall to the cage. If the stayrods intersect the allowed mounting plates at the firewall, they may be welded or bolted to the mounting plate. Otherwise, stayrods that pass through the the firewall may not be welded or attached to the firewall, and instead any resulting holes should be sealed. Under no circumstances will there be more than eight mounting plates aft of the firewall."
Clarification of weather strip item from Technical Bulletin 01/03, the original wording was "Clarification: Engine compartment and door weather stripping are considered insulation for the purpose of removal." Replace the words "weather stripping" with "rubber seals". The intent of this allowance is to provide for the non-use of the rubber seal. It does not allow the removal of any item the rubber seal is glued or attached to.
Add to section 17.1.7.D.9.a., p.63, the following words: "Bolt-in type cages shall no longer be allowed. Effective 1/1/03."
Ford Mustang (99-01), Includes Cobra, p.73, Correct "Notes" (as published in TB01-03) to read as follows: "94-95 Mustang K-member maybe used to facilitate installation of 302 engine. Under no circumstances may the 99-01 K-member be modified."
Ford Mustang (99-01), Includes Cobra, p.73, Correct "Gear Ratios" by adding "0.63" to the end of the list of standard ratios, and by adding "0.68" to the end of the list of alternate ratios.
Chevrolet Camaro (82-92), p. 73, Add to "Notes" sections: "Harwood fiberglass hood (P/N 20100) is permitted."
Pontiac Firebird (82-92), p. 73, Add to "Notes" sections: "Harwood fiberglass hood (P/N 20100) is permitted."

Chevrolet Camaro (93-99). Allow additional slotting for front lower control arm pivot point. This class does not allow the relocation of pickup points and this request is not consistent with the class purpose and intent.
Allow alternate steel crank. Rules creep.
Allow bigger front brakes. Rules creep.
Allow Jerico transmissions. Competition potential.
Allow 4 bolt main blocks. Not consistent with class purpose and intent.
Allow use of brake fluid recalculating devices. Modifications to brake circuitry are not consistent with class purpose and intent.
The following items have been previously addressed, are submitted for information only, or require no further action by the Competition Board


Request allowance for use of hand controls. Issue was addressed in 2001 GCR SEction 17.38.
Request to add differential coolers.

Allow Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird to use an alternate front mount for the torque arm that would attach to the chassis rather than the transmission. The torque arm would remain stock or stock length. (Various)
Allow Richmond T-10 "Race Ready" 4-speed transmission as an alternate transmission for all cars. Ratio sets which would be allowed are: "Z" (3.42, 2.28, 1.46, 1.00), "W" (2.64, 1.75, 1.34, 1.00), and "CC" (2.88, 1.91, 1.33, 1.00). (Various)
Allow all weatherstripping or weather seals (doors, hood, trunk or hatch lid) to be removed. (Comp Bd)
The following items have been REFERRED to their respective advisory committees or TABLED pending receipt of additional information.


Allow slotting or other modification to the front lower control arm pivot point so as to achieve greater negative camber. (LaCroix)
The following items are NOT RECOMMENDED for implementation at this time.


Allow replacement valve seats.
Allow non-racing gasoline. See Fastrack for details.
Allow transmission/differential oil coolers and necessary lines and pumps. (Wheeler) Inconsistent with the purpose and intent of the category.

The Competition Board asked the AS Advisory Committee to consider various possible approaches to limiting engine output. The Comp Board and the Committee will continue to monitor this issue and may reconsider it in the future.
